US signs deal with Bolivia to protect Singani

January 30,2020

It’s a great day for director Steven Soderbergh’s Bolivian spirit brand Singani 63.

After years of fighting, the new agreement means that the US will now recognise Singani, a type of brandy, as a distinctive product of Bolivia. In response, Bolivia will recognise Bourbon and Tennessee whiskey as US products.

Following the move, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) will publish a notice of the proposed rule and seek comments from the public.

Bolivia will grant the product recognition no more than 30 days after the US publishes a final rule to grant product status for Singani.

Known as Bolivia’s national drink, Singani is a distilled spirit made from white Muscat grapes and according to data from Euromonitor International in 2018, accounts for nearly half of the total volume of sales in the spirits category in Bolivia.

What's Your Whiskey? AI Can Tell You

November 30,2019

Spirits giant Diageo has launched a digital experience that uses AI (artificial intelligence) to analyse consumers’ flavour preferences and match them with their ideal single malt whisky.

The What’s Your Whisky? digital experience asks users 11 questions to understand what flavours they like. Questions range from ‘how often do you eat bananas?’ to ‘how do you feel about chillies?’.

The programme then assess the user’s enjoyment of a range of sweet, fruity, spicy and smoky flavours found in single malts whiskies and uses the data to create the consumer’s personal ‘flavour print’, then recommends a single malt with a flavour profile that suits.

The What’s Your Whisky? experience has launched in Great Britain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Greece, Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands and can be accessed online via whatsyourwhisky.com.
