World-famous NY bar Death & Co is set to open a new venue in the busy stretch of LAs Arts District this month. Opening along Third Street, near Wurstkuche, Inko Nito, Manuela, and a number of other restaurant and bar projects, Death & Co will bring the same rockstar attitude that exists in their New York venue.

The LA space will have two bars a front room called Standing Room and, behind it, the main bar. The cocktails, created by bartender Matt Belanger and beverage director Tyson Buhler, will differ in each room.

Death and Co. will be open nightly from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. The Standing Room section will be open only Thursdays through Saturdays.

Death & Co. Come Down Under

Influential New York bar, Death & Co. will pop up at three Australian venues for one night only; Wolf Lane in Perth (Wednesday 29th January); The Winery in Sydney (Sunday 2nd February) and Trinket in Melbourne (Wednesday 5th February).

At each venue, ​a bespoke cocktail and paired food experience will be carefully curated and delivered in true Death & Co speakeasy-style. ​Hosted by Death & Co partners, David Kaplan and Alex Day, the events will highlight the bars expertise and show why they are authorities with the contemporary cocktail movement.

The birthplace of some of the modern era’s most iconic drinks, Death & Co is known for defining the theories, ingredients and philosophies of modern drink-making, and for setting the pace for mixologists around the world.

What's Your Whiskey? AI Can Tell You

Spirits giant Diageo has launched a digital experience that uses AI (artificial intelligence) to analyse consumers’ flavour preferences and match them with their ideal single malt whisky.

The What’s Your Whisky? digital experience asks users 11 questions to understand what flavours they like. Questions range from ‘how often do you eat bananas?’ to ‘how do you feel about chillies?’.

The programme then assess the user’s enjoyment of a range of sweet, fruity, spicy and smoky flavours found in single malts whiskies and uses the data to create the consumer’s personal ‘flavour print’, then recommends a single malt with a flavour profile that suits.

The What’s Your Whisky? experience has launched in Great Britain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Greece, Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands and can be accessed online via whatsyourwhisky.com.

Aston-Martin Granted Alcohol Trademark

The British car company, Aston Martin has been granted a trademark for its name and wing logo to be used in relation to alcoholic beverages.

The company has refused to comment on whether the trademark foreshadows a new product release in the drinks sector.

A spokesperson told The Telegraph: “We are very protective of the Aston Martin brand, and we are continually filing trademarks for the Aston Martin brand in various sectors to do this.”

It is not the first time that the car manufacturer has ventured into alcohol. In 2015 the company teamed up with LVMH’s Dom Pérignon to create a bespoke Champagne ‘cellar’ that fits into the boot of a car.

Lyre's Aperitif Rosso Wins Top Award

Lyre’s has been awarded Double Gold for its Aperitif Rosso non-alcoholic spirit at the inaugural Concours d’Spirits competition.
It was one of only five double gold medals presented across all categories and the only non-alcohol product to be bestowed the honour in a field of traditional alcohol products.
Concours d’Spirits is judged blind by 12 world renowned palates and leaders within the wine and spirits industry. It was held during SommCon in San Diego, California, earlier this month.
Aperitif Rosso is part of Lyre’s premium range of 13 non-alcoholic spirit variants.
The brand also received three silver medals for its Orange Sec, White Cane Spirit and Aperitif Dry non-alcoholic spirit brands.

Dog sniffs out a Prohibition-era still

Heath Schneider from Iowa Legendary Rye makes his whiskey using his grandmother’s prohibition-era recipe (which yielded over 300 gallons a day) but legend has it that the still she used and 15 barrels of her whiskey was buried nearly 90 years ago to avoid being caught by the federal government.

Last year Iowa Legendary Rye commissioned search specialists to locate the missing still and barrels. A specially trained sniffer dog following the scent of rye discovered the buried still last week, along with charred oak consistent with the material used to make rye barrels.

Schneider continues the search, as he hopes to find at least one of the 15 barrels intact. “Just three molecules from the barrel can produce the exact same yeast,” he said. “We’re 95% of the way to making our rye exactly like she used to. Having that yeast is the missing link.”
