When you get home after a long day, the last thing you want to do is fiddle around with strainers and multiple ingredients. What you actually want is something that’s quick, delicious and has just that right amount of kick.

If you’ve been looking for a drink that delivers all that, in a foolproof way … every time … then Martin Hudák, Global Coffee Ambassador of Mr Black has a drink that will ensure you are coming back for seconds.

“Cold Fashioned is a bold and elegant combination of bittersweet coffee and spicy whiskey with a hint of vanilla and orange aftertaste,” he said

Yes, Cold Fashioned has only two ingredients. Yes, Cold Fashioned is really simple to make. But it’s worth noting that the Cold Fashioned is, like all deceptively simple drinks, all about the details.

So Hudák took some time in his American style venue, Maybe Sammy in Sydney, to shows us how to combine the richness an American-style Single Malt with one of Australia’s favourite craft liqueurs.

Ice

We all know ice is essential, but as Hukák points out, ice is particularly vital in drinks like the Cold Fashioned. Sure it dilutes and accentuates the flavour, but ice also controls the temperature of the drink, which is keys not only to a consistent cocktail but also to preserving your drinks for longer. After all, it’s important to remember that good ice is to a bartender, what the flame is to a chef.

Mr Black

The thing about Mr Black is that it brings the richness of coffee that you love from your daytime expresso into the drink you choose once the sun has set.  A bittersweet
blend of top-grade Arabica coffees and Australian wheat vodka, Mr Black presents a bold complexity that is unapologetically balanced with a cold brew coffee that even the most stringent purest will love.

Westward Whiskey

While the idea of an American Single Malt may seem a little foreign, there is a lot within its distillation that is familiar. Grain-to-glass, Westward celebrates the craft movement with a spirit that is made from two-row barley, fermented with American ale yeast and double pot distilled, before being matured in new American oak barrels. The flavour this Whiskey imparts not only has a little spicy but also a beautiful blend of Vanilla and Cinnamon notes.

Finish

A nice brisk stir melds the flavours together before you strain the drink into an Old Fashioned glass with a single large ice cube. As tempting as this may look to drink this cocktail now, take a few minutes to properly garnish this drink and the Orange rind twist will not only impart the drink with orange oils but also present a beautiful aroma to the finished cocktail.
